Two Hands chisels on bench

Two Hands Chisels

Made by Rowan in our Castlemaine workshop, we are proud to be working in the tradition of small batch artisan tool making.

Designed for fine woodworking, Two Hands bench chisels pay homage to both western and Japanese traditions. We have found a unique point of view that is born from Rowan’s experience as a knife maker / teacher and his object design and making for Rowsaan.

Developed throughout 2025 for a 2026 release, our chisels have been generously bench tested by Alastair Boell at the Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking, providing invaluable feedback for fine tuning.

Design

Nimble & Balanced Blade

  • Our blades strike a balance between thinness and rigidity, leaning towards a thinner blade as a fine woodworking bench chisel. The blade thickness tapers from 5mm at the rear to approx. 3.5mm at the front.

All Round Handle

  • The handle and ferrule design provides a comfortable and secure hold for all day use. The handle is designed for comfortable push cuts and to withstand light to medium mallet striking with a soft timber mallet.

Low Clearance sides

  • Hand ground side bevels are hollow ground and taken to a thin edge for maximum clearance working in corners.

Materials

Blade Steel

  • Uddeholm 26C3, heat treated to 63Rc.

  • 26C3 works well on the anvil, has good stability during heat treatment, good toughness, provides a fine edge and an ease of sharpening.

Handle

  • Various hardwoods.
