Drawing on a decade of forging kitchen knives and a background in gold and silversmithing, we have meticulously developed our bench chisels over two years at our workshop in Castlemaine.
Bench testing by Alastair Boell at the Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking, along with feedback from Simeon Dux and Fred Ganim, provided the foundation for the development of the chisels.

Blade
The chisel blade taper is forged in for balance and fineness and while hot, our hands touch mark is stamped in.
The slim blade and narrow side lands are designed for precise work, allowing access to tight spots while having the strength and stiffness for light chopping of roughed out joints and paring to cut lines.
The blades are designed for edge stability and ease of sharpening through steel selection, heat treatment and edge geometry. The intention making these tools is for the woodworker to keep the edges well tuned and sharp during their workflow at the bench.
Sharpening
Chisels come tuned for work.
The chisel back is lapped to a mid grit finish with the tip area lapped to an 8k polish. The back will only need to see your finest stone during honing to remove the burr.
The edge bevel is ground to 25º on an 8” wheel and the edge is honed at 30º to an 8k polish.
Handles
The handle, ferrule and bolster arrangement provides a robust fit up with the benefits of both socket and tang. Pared with a rounded and pre hammered handle butt, the handle design allows careful use of a mallet while working.
Handle timber options
We have standard timber options (current options provided once an order enquiry is sent) or a custom timber option giving the opportunity for customers to provide timber from their own collection.
